Often identified by a dark brown violin shape on its back, the brown recluse spider is predominantly found in the Southeast of the United States. This species is well known for its secretive behaviors, as it prefers to take residence in warm, dry and dark environments, such as woodpiles, basements, attics and closets.
Like many spiders, the brown recluse likes to stay secluded in dark corners of places that are rarely disturbed or cleaned. Inside locations such as voids between walls, storage areas and basements inside houses can provide plenty of areas for these pests to hide. Outside these spiders may inhabit sheds, barns and garages and may unknowingly be brought inside a home when moving stored items inside. The abundance of prey insects can lure a brown recluse spider inside the house, as well as provide a sustainable source of food should they get inside a home.
Brown recluse bites are usually unintentional when it feels trapped, typically when a hand or foot reaches into a shoe, piece of clothing, or a box in the attic where a brown recluse has made its home. Clothes and shoes should not be left on the floor, or they should be shaken out before wearing, especially if stored in the basement, garage, or other dark areas. It’s good practice to store seldom-used items, such as boots, toys, gardening clothes and gloves in tightly sealed plastic bags or boxes.
Since every building or home is unique, your technician will design a special program for your situation. Keeping spiders out of homes and buildings is an ongoing process, not a one-time treatment.
Did you know…….???
- Bed bugs are “hitch hikers”, which allows them to travel long distances. They latch onto suitcases, clothes, linens and can end up wherever these are items are taken. Therefore, the spread of bed bugs occurs very easily, and ANYONE can get them!
- They grow to about ¼ of an inch long and do not have wings to fly. They can be very difficult for the untrained eye to identify.
- They feed on humans and other warm-blooded animals, mainly at night, leaving behind small, itchy red spots on the body that can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes and large whelps.
- They are found every place people tend to gather- residences, hotels, schools, offices, churches, stores and public transportation.
- One female bed bug can lay up to seven eggs at one time and up to 200 in her 3-4-month life span. In just a few short months, you can have an infestation in the thousands.

Thermal Acoustical Pest Control (TAP) Insulation
EPA-registered TAP pest control insulation is an innovative solution for removing unwanted pests from the home while helping save money on energy costs all year long.
As an EPA-registered pesticide, TAP pest control insulation controls common pests that invade the home through the attic such as ants, boxelder bugs, centipedes, cockroaches, millipedes, silverfish, and stink bugs.
TAP is green and aligns with current IPM techniques. When added to existing insulation or installed on its own, TAP insulation controls bugs and helps to keep the air in the living areas of your home comfortable. It reduces the required energy needed to heat or cool the home and, in turn, reduces your heating and cooling costs.
Uniquely offering two solutions in one product: an energy-efficient blown-in insulation coupled with the added value of pest control. TAP pest control insulation helps keep the bugs out and comfort in.
Encapsulation/Moisture Control
There is always air movement occurring between your crawl space and house. Even if your floor is insulated, air is still traveling throughout your house. This process is called the stack effect or convection. Warm air in the upper level of your home rises and is expelled through windows, vents, cracks, and gaps. As it rises, air from lower levels, including the crawl space, of your home rushes in to fill the vacuum.
Air from your crawlspace enters your home along with everything in it. Odors, fungus spores, and dust mite feces enter your home. This can cause a variety of respiratory problems, including allergies and asthma. Air, often filled with more moisture, gets sucked into the crawl space from the outdoors. In this sense, a poorly designed crawl space acts like a bad air machine.
Excess moisture in a vented, dirt-floored crawl space can damage insulation while also causing fungus problems.
Heavy-duty moisture barriers used in the encapsulation process transform the crawl space into a dry, clean, energy-efficient part of the house.
Steps to installing a crawl space encapsulation
- Install airtight doors & vent covers: Sealing your crawl space doors and vents stops the cycle of cold, humidity, and moisture entering from the outside air. However, water can still enter your crawlspace in many ways.
- Remove any standing water sources: The next step is to eliminate any sources of flooding in your crawl space by installing a crawl space drain and sump pump system. This eliminates flooding water from your crawl space, but moisture can still enter directly through the concrete and floor in the form of water vapor.
- Encapsulate & insulate the crawl space: To stop moisture from passing through your floors and porous concrete walls, a crawl space vapor barrier should be installed. A durable liner will allow for servicemen to use the space without damage while transforming your crawl space into usable storage space. This is also the best time to install crawl space insulation on your walls or floors. Installing crawl space drainage matting underneath the crawl space liner will help direct water to the drainage system and sump pump.
- Install a dehumidifier: Installing an energy-efficient, self-draining crawl space dehumidifier will keep your space dry. Our crawl space dehumidifier system includes a filter that removes particles from the air as small as 2 microns. This ensures that your crawl space is protected from fungus, dust mites, and mildew damage, permanently!
Inspection
An inspector will perform a thorough examination of you home by checking your basement or crawlspace for moisture, your foundation for wood debris, and other risk areas that may attract an infestation. HonorGuard utilizes state-of-the-art equipment such as moisture meters, and termite detection systems to help scientifically assess your home. When we are done, you will receive our recommendation, complete with a customized diagram and an inspection report outlining problems we identified, as well as recommended plan to protect your home from termites.
If we find a termite infestation or the potential for one, we will discuss the best solution for your situation. Based on the layout of your home and the degree of termite infestation, we will create a customized treatment plan tailored for your home.
Liquid Termite Treatments
This termite solution is safe for indoor and outdoor application and can be used within building foundations to provide a protective barrier around your home. In addition to immediate protection, this treatment guards against future infestations. In order to deliver the exact amount necessary, we carefully inspect, measure and graph each home. This treatment lasts for 10 years and offers immediate protection as well as protection from future infestations throughout the duration of the protection plan.
Monitoring
This treatment disrupts termite molting processes, stunting their growth, and is applied to areas at most risk of attracting the pests like moist soil or mulch, old tree stumps, irrigation sprinkler heads, and downspouts. Monitors provide continual protection without causing damage to your property. After service is completed, your technician will fill out a service ticket that explains exactly what was done and when he’ll be back to monitor the progress of treatments.
Renewal
After your treatment, we will implement a continuous termite protection plan to monitor and help protect your home for any future signs of termite activity. Your plan will also include a re-treatment program. That way, in the unlikely event that termites invade your home following our visit, we will also return to battle the problem at no additional charge.
